Bell's Mobile Take-back program

Bell Canada If you have a used mobile phone, you can now return it to any Bell store across the country or one of the 480 participating Desjardins branches in Ontario and Quebec. Bell will donate $1.00proceeds from the return of each used mobile phone to WWF-Canada's climate change conservation efforts. Returned mobile phones will be reused or recycled, reducing the accumulation of e-waste in landfills, the fastest growing form of waste in the country.

Where can I return my used mobile phone?
You can return used mobile phones from all manufacturers to any Bell store (List of Bell stores) across Canada or any participating Desjardins branch across Ontario and Quebec (List of branches). You can also ship your phone by Canada Post, free of charge. Accessories, batteries and personal digital assistants are also accepted. For more details on how to do this, please visit: www.bell.ca/takeback.

What will Bell do with the donated phones?
About half of the phones will be refurbished and reused and the remaining phones will be recycled in Canada in compliance with Canadian regulations. Approximately 96 per cent of a mobile phone's weight is recyclable. The only current waste component is the rubber keypad, although ways to recycle it are being explored. Recycled mobile phone components are used to create a number of different items, such as plastic lumber.

Does it really make a difference if I return my phone?
YES! In Canada, e-waste is now the fastest growing segment of solid waste. Bell has collected 232,000 phones since 2003, diverting 33 metric tons from landfill.

Moreover by simply returning your used mobile phone you are contributing $1.00 to WWF-Canada. Your donation will be helping WWF-Canada, the global conservation organization, to help fight climate change.

What happens to the personal information stored on my phone?
WWF-Canada and Bell are both committed to ensuring the privacy of the people who donate their mobile phones. All data is deleted from returned phones.

Bell's Everday Kyoto Program

Bell is partnering with WWF-Canada in the mobile take-back program. You can return any used mobile to Bell and help conserve in more ways than one! You'll be reducing e-waste in landfills and Bell will donate profits generated by the collection to WWF's conservation and climate change programs.

With a workforce totaling some 55 000 employees, Bell Canada decided it had to be proactive in creating awareness about climate change. In 2004, the company launched its Everyday Kyoto program. The goal: get employees to commit to everyday actions to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at work, at home and on the road.

The company reached out to employees in a variety of ways: face-to-face and on-line training, booths, a web-based video, posters, articles and web conferences. Employees were invited to choose from a series of 23 actions to reduce their GHG emissions. The following is an example of such a pledge.

  • At home: I will convert my household waste into compost.
  • Commuting: At least once a week, when I commute to work I will: carpool OR take public transit OR walk or bike.
  • At work (technicians): I will adopt the following good driving habits: keep my car's tires inflated at the right pressure, avoid jackrabbit starts, ease up on the accelerator, respect speed limits and reduce use of vehicle air conditioning during the summer.
  • At work (office employees): Whenever possible, I will use teleconferencing instead of travelling.

More than 115 information sessions were held throughout the company. An Everyday Kyoto Intranet site makes the program accessible to all employees in the company and year after year they can renew their commitments. In fact according to an internal survey conducted in 2005, seven out of ten program participants indicated they were fulfilling their pledge most of the time.

As of today, more than 2,800 employees have pledged to act on specific greenhouse gas reduction activities. These commitments amount to 4,500 metric tons of CO2 yearly.
