About
the Nunavut Wildlife Health Assessment Project (NWHP)
The
main goal of the Nunavut Wildlife Health Assessment Project (NWHP) is to assess
the current status of wildlife health and to investigate the potential harm to
wildlife resulting from the presence of contaminants in the Arctic ecosystem.
This
project records historical wildlife health trends by documenting Elder's
knowledge, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), and makes comparisons to the recent
observations of experienced hunters. It has also established a pilot program
intended to monitor current and future health conditions of wildlife through
the use of hunters' observations on the health status of their regular
harvests.
This
information has the potential, over time, to provide a valuable record that may
be used to monitor future changes in wildlife health should it be influenced by
the multiple stressors of contaminant exposure and climate change. NWHP also
provides Northern communities with current information on the issues and
potential influences of previous and ongoing contaminant exposure on wildlife
health.
